Ready to take the next step in your accounting career and have greater involvement in how a business operates?

Looking to build on your accounting experience and play a greater part in the day-to-day running of a business?

Our client is an established, family-owned Christchurch manufacturing and distribution business with a specialist product offering and customers across New Zealand and international markets.
This is an opportunity for an accountant ready to move beyond traditional financial accounting and take on broader responsibility within a commercially focused SME.

The opportunity
Reporting directly to the Managing Director, this hands-on role combines responsibility for the day-to-day finance function with the opportunity to develop your involvement in business planning, financial analysis and commercial decision-making.
You'll work closely with the MD to understand performance, identify opportunities for improvement and provide meaningful financial insight to support business decisions.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Preparing management accounts, financial reporting and analysis
  • Supporting budgeting, forecasting and cash flow management
  • Developing insight into sales, margins, pricing and product costs
  • Overseeing transactional finance, payroll and compliance
  • Improving financial processes, systems and reporting
  • Providing guidance and support to a small team
You'll gain visibility across the wider business, developing an understanding of the operational and commercial drivers behind the numbers.

About you
You may be an experienced Financial Accountant, Management Accountant or BAS accountant ready for commercial responsibility and exposure.
You'll have a sound technical accounting foundation, enjoy working with financial information and be curious about how the numbers connect to business performance.

You don't need to have done everything this role offers, but you'll bring the confidence, initiative and willingness to learn.

Ideally, you'll bring:
  • Strong financial accounting, reporting and month-end experience
  • Exposure to budgeting, forecasting or management accounting
  • Good analytical skills and confidence with Excel and systems
  • An organised, accurate and practical approach
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • An interest in developing your commercial and leadership capability
Manufacturing experience would be advantageous, although we also welcome accountants looking to move from a larger organisation or professional practice into an SME.

A relevant accounting qualification is preferred, with professional membership welcomed but not essential.

Why consider this opportunity?
This is an opportunity to broaden your accounting career and gain exposure that can be difficult to achieve within a larger finance team.

You'll work directly with the Managing Director, contribute to financial and operational decisions and build your capability across the wider business.
With a collaborative, practical and people-focused environment, this role would suit someone who enjoys being hands-on, values strong working relationships and wants to grow with a business over the longer term.
