Payroll Officer | Part-time Christchurch role with GCH Aviation, managing complex end-to-end payroll across a trusted aviation business.

Christchurch Head Office
Permanent Part-time | 25-30 hours per fortnight

GCH Aviation is a high-profile, family-owned aviation business with more than 30 years' experience across emergency air rescue, commercial aviation, tourism and specialist aviation services. With safety at the heart of everything they do, GCH Aviation is known for its operational excellence, experienced people and commitment to delivering professional, trusted aviation services across Aotearoa.

As the organisation continues to strengthen its internal systems and finance capability, GCH Aviation is now seeking a dedicated Payroll Officer to take ownership of payroll.

About the opportunity
This is a trusted and important role within the finance function, responsible for ensuring employees are paid accurately, on time and in line with New Zealand payroll legislation, company policies and internal processes.

Reporting to the Finance Manager, you will work closely with the People and Culture Lead, managers and employees across the business, providing practical payroll support while helping to improve consistency, documentation and confidence in payroll processes.

This is not a simple data-entry payroll role. GCH Aviation operates across multiple business entities, with approximately 150 employees and a mix of operational roles, employment agreements, allowances and roster patterns. Some staff work non-standard arrangements, including 24-hour shifts and complex rotations, and the current rostering system does not fully integrate with payroll. This means you will need to bring strong judgement, accuracy and confidence in interpreting payroll information carefully.

The hours are expected to vary across the fortnight, with around 18-20 hours likely required during pay-run weeks and lighter hours during non-pay-run weeks for queries, preparation, follow-up and process improvement.

What you'll be doing
You will be responsible for end-to-end payroll processing across the GCH Aviation, including employee changes, leave, deductions, allowances, pay adjustments, reconciliations and payroll reporting.

You will maintain accurate payroll records, support payroll-related compliance obligations, respond to payroll queries with professionalism and discretion and work closely with Finance and HR to ensure payroll information is accurate and well managed.

There will also be scope to contribute to ongoing improvements in payroll systems, processes and documentation, helping the business strengthen efficiency, consistency and internal controls over time.

About you
You will be an experienced payroll professional who enjoys taking ownership of your work and understands the importance of getting the detail right. You may come from a medium-sized or operationally complex environment where payroll involves more than standard salaried processing.

You will bring:
  • Proven end-to-end payroll processing experience
  • A sound understanding of New Zealand payroll legislation, including Holidays Act, PAYE and KiwiSaver obligations
  • Experience working with varied employment agreements, allowances, leave and payroll adjustments
  • Strong attention to detail and a calm, methodical approach
  • Confidence using payroll systems and intermediate Microsoft Excel skills
  • The ability to manage confidential information with care and professionalism
  • A practical, solutions-focused mindset and an interest in improving processes
Just as importantly, you will be approachable, reliable and service-oriented. Payroll is a highly trusted function, and GCH Aviation is looking for someone who can build positive working relationships across the business while maintaining strong payroll discipline and accuracy.

Why join GCH Aviation?
This is an opportunity to join a values-led aviation business with a strong sense of pride, safety, family and legacy. You will be part of a close and capable team, supporting a workforce that plays an important role across emergency services, tourism and aviation operations.

For someone who enjoys payroll complexity, values trust and accuracy and wants to make a practical contribution within a distinctive New Zealand business, this is a meaningful part-time opportunity.
