Do you enjoy the technical side of tax but want broader involvement in how advice is shaped and delivered? For many tax professionals, the next step is less about title and more about the environment you work in - the conversations you’re part of, the exposure you get and the ability to develop your own judgement.
This role offers exactly that.
The Opportunity A respected professional services firm is expanding its Christchurch tax capability in response to continued growth and demand for specialist advice.
The team is deliberately lean. You won’t be sitting three layers away from decisions or waiting for work to filter down.
You’ll be involved early – not just executing work but shaping how advice is formed. One day may involve researching complex legislation or supporting advisory work for a transaction; another may involve assisting internal teams or preparing advice for clients navigating new tax challenges.
You won’t be boxed into a narrow slice of tax. The work spans a range of issues and industries, giving you both technical depth and commercial perspective.
What You’ll Be Involved In You will contribute across a range of tax matters, including:
- Researching and interpreting New Zealand tax legislation and Inland Revenue guidance
- Drafting tax advice and technical correspondence
- Supporting complex tax return work across companies, trusts and other entities
- Assisting advisory and audit teams with specialist tax input
- Participating in technical discussions and knowledge sharing within the team
- Attending client meetings and contributing to advisory delivery
The work requires thoughtful analysis, clear communication and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
About You You are an experienced tax professional working within a professional services environment and have developed a strong grounding in New Zealand tax.
You are comfortable navigating technical legislation, forming well-reasoned views and contributing to the development of practical advice for clients. You enjoy the analytical side of tax but also value the opportunity to be involved in how advice is shaped and delivered.
You are likely to bring:
- Solid experience working with New Zealand tax legislation
- Professional services experience within a tax team
- CA qualification
- Strong analytical thinking and clear written communication skills
- The confidence to contribute to technical discussions and develop your own view
Most importantly, you take ownership of your work, approach technical issues with curiosity and enjoy working as part of a collaborative professional team.
Why This Role Stands Out A lot of tax roles talk about variety and development. In practice, many become narrow or heavily layered.
In this role you will benefit from:
- Direct access to experienced tax leaders and involvement in technical discussions
- Broad exposure across advisory and compliance work, rather than a narrow niche
- A collaborative and supportive team culture where ideas are encouraged
- A respected firm with strong foundations and a loyal client base
- Genuine opportunity to develop your capability and influence over time
The work can be complex and at times demanding, but it’s the kind of environment where you’ll develop faster because of it. For someone looking to deepen their expertise while staying connected to the bigger picture, it’s a role worth exploring.
